There are four types of hot water systems available to you, so having a clear understanding of what is on the market is important, when making a decision to buy or replace an old hot water system. Choosing the most efficient and suitable hot water system for your home is extremely important as “water heating accounts for a quarter of typical household energy use – and it can be even more” (Origin, 2015). Here are a few simple steps to help you make the right decision when buying a hot water system.

Determine the climate

In Australia, our climate is very warm, therefore solar and heat pump hot water systems are an energy efficient option.

Electric, gas, solar or heat pump … which is best for me?

You will need to make a decision between these, so here are the differences.

Electric Hot Water System

Heated storage tank is a cheap option to buy and install, however more expensive to run if it’s in peak times. An average household with four people will need a 125-160L tank for a continuous system. This system can be installed indoors or outdoors.

Cost: They range in price from about $300 to $1500 (not including installation).

Gas hot water system

Natural gas is cheaper than electricity and it does not matter if you are using it on or off peak time due to gas pricing staying the same throughout the day. A four-person household requires a tank of 135-170L. Gas hot water systems are installed outdoors due to venting regulations however if installed with a flue, can be put indoors. They also have an energy efficiency star rating which makes them better for the environment.

Cost: They range in price from about $900 to $2000 (not including installation).

Solar hot water system

Powered by the sun, a solar panels heat is linked to the storage tank. You need a larger tank 300-360L to allow for days with less sunlight, and you must ensure the installation of these panels done correctly, so that you have a large collection area to gather as much light as possible. Often a gas or electric booster element is installed too, for days with less sunlight. Installation of a solar hot water system is more expensive, however in the long run it is a cheaper option.

Cost: They range in price from about $2000 to $7000 (not including installation).

Heat pump hot water system

The heat pump hot water system extracts heat from the air and uses it to heat the tank. The heat pump must be installed into a ventilated area, therefore outdoors is best. The unit can be noisy therefore a bit of distance from the house is recommended. These types of hot water systems are best in warm regions however you can find specific heat pump systems designed for cold climates. A tank between 270-315L is required.

Cost: They range in price from about $2500 to $4000 (not including installation).

Each system has its benefits, however it comes down to which solution is best for you and your home. Call RJW Gas Services now for information about hot water servicing and repairs.
