What is natural gas?
Natural gas is a fossil fuel made up of mainly methane. “It’s formed by decomposing organic matter trapped in porous rock beneath the surface of the earth” (Energy Australia). So what are the benefits of using natural gas?
Natural gas is lighter than air; therefore it dissipates more quickly than other gases such as LPG and petrol. It is a very versatile gas being used in steam heat production, electrical generation, manufacturing, and domestic use. It is a preferred gas as it produces 65% less emissions than coal per kilowatt hour, and 25% less emissions than oil, being much more beneficial for the environment (Ecana, 2015).
What are the risks of using natural gas?
Natural gas is a colorless gas therefore you can’t see it if there are any gas leaks. It is also flammable; therefore it is important to get gas appliances regularly checked. Natural gas can’t be smelt however gas companies add mercaptan, a chemical that makes the gas leak smell like rotten eggs therefore you are aware when there is a gas leak.
